Mullaperiyar Issue - To be or Not to be
No body has a clue of what is going to happen with Mullaperiyar Dam, Neither the Govt. of Kerala nor Tamil Nadu. Everyday concludes with some abstract ideas of what both the govt. are planning to do, keeping the people at the verge of fear. The lack of forecasting is strictly evident in this scenario. The surki made dam wont be strong enough to hold the 999 years contract. The renovation of the dam or such conditions were not mentioned in any place by both the parties in the treaty, during its signing in 1886.
What concerns Kerala is the existance of the heavily inhabited area near the catchment area of the dam and what bothers Tamil Nadu is the disastrous drought likely to occur. But so far no body has been able to put forward a viable solution to satisfy both the parties having different interests. The 116 year old dam has been found to be prone to earthquakes and the already leaking dam is found not to withstand an earthquake of magnitude more than 8 ritcher scale. What makes Tamil Nadu more hostile towards the construction of new dam is their fear that the new dam will be controlled by the Kerala Govt, and the huge profits made (1600 crore worth electricity) will be at stake. Tamil Nadu pays kerala govt. mearly a sum of 40 lakhs per year as the lease amount and benefits heavily from it. They also doubt about the amount of water to be received.
